Please try again The Monarchs scored four batters into the game on a sacrifice fly from third baseman Edwin Diaz. That marked the seventh straight game in which the Goldeyes surrendered the first run, stretching back to the beginning of their last series against the Chicago Dogs. Kansas City added to its lead in the second inning when centre fielder Keon Broxton doubled to centre, scoring two runs to make it 3-0. Winnipeg got on the board in the third inning, when centre fielder Tra Holmes scored on an Andy Armstrong fielders choice to make it 3-1. In the inning, Goldeyes third baseman Dayson Croes recorded a single to right field, extending his American Association-best hit streak to 23 games. In the fourth inning, Winnipeg loaded the bases but stranded all three runners. The Monarchs added two more runs on a Gavin Collins two-run blast to centre field to make it 5-1. The Goldeyes then started to chip away at the Kansas City lead. This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. Max Murphy closed the gap to 5-3 after he doubled to centre to bring home Croes and Armstrong in the bottom half of the seventh. In the eighth, Croes recorded his second hit of the game to bring home Brynn Martinez to make it 5-4. That was followed by an Armstrong sacrifice fly to left that scored Holmes to tie it at five. A scoreless ninth for both teams sent the game to extra innings, where Kansans City pounced early to take back the lead. A single from Monarchs right fielder Micker Adolfo scored Collins from second to make it 6-5. The Goldeyes responded with a run in the bottom half, with Croes striking again and scoring Holmes on a double to right field to knot things back up 6-6. The Monarch ultimately recorded the decisive runs in the top of the 11th when first baseman Jan Hernandez doubled to left to bring Broxton and Dylan Rosa home to make it 8-6. How do you think they did? “On the gradation of tough, root canal to eating oatmeal, it was closer to a root canal,’’ Florida Panthers coach Paul Maurice said. He followed that good line with a purposefully deadpan stare, his flat, facial features saying it was OK for you to smile, even beckoning you to do so, even if his comic delivery demanded no reaction himself. Less than an hour after the Panthers played their biggest and sloppiest period of the playoffs to turn a tie game into a 5-2 loss to Vegas, there was Maurice explaining what it all meant. And, more importantly, how his team should digest it heading into Monday’s Game 2. “Everybody can breathe,’’ Maurice said in a crowded press room asking what went wrong in this Stanley Cup Final opener. “I feel like you people, you’re tight.” That deadpan stare again. His exercise at humor is, in an entertaining way, also an exhibition of clenched strength. His mind is no doubt breaking down tactical issues even as his voice is dripping with some necessary perspective. “The losing team talks of too many of something and the winning team talks about the fabulousness of all the other things and it’s 2-2 until that puck’s turned over,’’ he said. It was actually 2-2 until Zach Whitecloud put the kind of distant shot that’s not eluded Panthers goalie Sergei Bobrovsky these playoffs, then 3-2 until Matthew Tkachuk turned over the puck for a point-blank goal, then 4-2 until an empty-net score sent Vegas happy into the night. Here’s the larger point Maurice understands there will be strategic refinements to make, starting with a power play that’s fueled many good nights these playoffs but was 0 for 3 in Game 1. “I’ve got faith in my group that we’ll learn,’’ he said. The other side, the mental ability to manage a tough series, is equally as important. That demands the coach understand what moves his team, to tap into the team’s emotional taproot. This brand of humor and perspective wouldn’t work for the Miami Heat, a defiant team playing on the edge of angry. Coach Erik Spoelstra talked after that crushing Game 6 against Boston with a raw and real voice about how they’d be ready for Game 7. That was their way. The Panthers are a different animal. They’re a team with constantly evolving player nicknames. They award an actual T-bone to the player with the most “dog” in him in a particular game meaning a winning game. The player has to then gnaw on it before everyone. This is armor the Panthers use to help this run. They’re laughing as they line up outside the locker room to take the ice, though what they’re often laughing at is known only to them. “I don’t understand half of what they’re saying,’’ Maurice said. Maurice has been a NHL head coach since 28, and one manner he’s improved besides the tactical ideas of hockey is in loosening up his personality. He’s talked of the importance of letting others see he’s having fun. To laugh, when a human touch is needed. Sometimes a good coach pretends it’s all fun, too, if it serves the larger purpose of keeping his team relaxed. That’s the idea after an odd opener. Both teams played physical, but neither team looked singularly sharp. Vegas coach Bruce Cassidy said they didn’t play their best game. Nor did the Panthers. “We didn’t score on our best chances, they didn’t score on their best chances,’’ Maurice said. “A couple Vegas point shots snuck there way through. We sneak one through. The best chances teams had the goalies made gave saves on.” The Panthers power play has to have impact. So does Tkachuk, who didn’t influence the game much beyond a few scrums, the final of which got him and Sam Bennett kicked out of the game after it had been decided. “Eh, so, they got the first one,’’ veteran Eric Staal said. “This is going to be fun,’’ Carter Verhaeghe said of the physical style this night took. “That’s how you want it.” One game, they were saying. One missed chance. The Panthers haven’t missed many chances in winning 11 of their previous 12 playoff games. They also haven’t started a series with a loss since the first round against Boston. They didn’t get anxious trailing Boston. They won’t after one game. “Why do I have to be in a bad mood today just because we lost the game?” Maurice said Sunday morning. “That also doesn’t do my team any good, sending messages … that’s not how we want to operate.” He added, “We’ve worked really, really hard to allow it to be fun.” They know the stakes. After coming over from Oakland in a trade, Irvin had a ERA in his first three starts, and he was sent down to return as a starter Saturday didn’t begin the way he would’ve hoped, either. He gave up singles to two of the first three batters, putting himself in a position he found all too familiar at the beginning of April — pitching with his back against the it was a stellar grab up against the wall from right fielder Anthony Santander that allowed Irvin to leave the first inning with a zero on the board and a weight off his and his defense were stellar for the remainder of his start, as the left-hander pitched 5 1/3 innings of one-run ball to earn his first win as an Oriole in Baltimore’s 6-1 victory over the visiting Kansas City Royals.“Getting through that first inning was a little rough for me. My adrenaline was really kicked in,” Irvin said. “But Tony making that play out in right against the fence, he had a day out there in right field with me on the mound. I definitely owe him one, and it definitely calmed me down coming in.”Cole Irvin pitched 5 1/3 innings of one-run ball to earn his first win with the Orioles, 6-1 over the Royals, as Baltimore struck early and late in securing its third straight victory. Nick Wass/APIrvin raised his arms exuberantly and tipped his cap to Santander, who received roaring cheers from the announced 34,136 in attendance. He later tipped his cap to center fielder Aaron Hicks for a sliding catch in the second inning and to second baseman Adam Frazier for a jump throw in the third.“That’s how I pitch. I rely on the defense,” Irvin said. “I’ve already talked to Tony, but I know there’s a little party favor for what he did out there today. I put him through a conditioning test. Not my initial plan, but man, the defense was great. Frazier’s play up the middle, Hicks’ diving catch in center. It was just an all-around great team game.”While his defense was outstanding, Irvin was sharp in his own right. He scattered six hits and struck out five, pairing his sinker and changeup to great effect. The lone run he allowed came on a single in the fifth inning from Freddy Fermin. He didn’t walk a batter, which should be expected for someone with his strike-throwing pedigree from his days with the Athletics, but he struggled commanding his pitches early this season. Fifty-five of Irvin’s 72 pitches were strikes.“Uncharacteristically, his first couple starts here, he just had a lot of walks and was kind of pitching behind in the count,” manager Brandon Hyde said. “Today he was more aggressive in the strike zone and pitching to contact, and we played well behind him.”Simply put, Irvin looked like the Cole Irvin the Orioles thought they were getting when they traded infield prospect Darell Hernaiz for him in January.“Yeah, that’s a little bit more normal,” Irvin said with a smile. “I’m just happy to be in the win column, in this uniform, too.”Baltimore’s bats provided enough runs in the first inning, as Kansas City starter Brady Singer needed 39 pitches to get three outs. After his excellent catch in the top of the first, Santander ripped a double down the right field line to score Adley Rutschman, who walked in his first at-bat of his Captain America-themed bobblehead game. Ryan O’Hearn then singled home Santander, who went 3-for-4 with two doubles, to give the Orioles a 2-0 Henderson, hitting in the leadoff spot for the first time this season, homered in the second. Austin Hays hit an RBI single in the fifth, and Frazier blasted a two-run homer in the eighth.“If he can do what he did today every five days, I think that’s going to help out our staff a lot, help out our team a lot,” Frazier said about Irvin. “Hopefully he takes a lot from that, builds some confidence and come back and do it again in five days, because the way he was throwing today he can get a lot of guys out.”Irvin was pulled about 25 pitches earlier than expected as he worked his way through the third time of the order, but the bullpen backed him up. Bryan Baker, Austin Voth, Cionel Pérez and Mike Baumann combined to pitch 3 2/3 scoreless innings. Their success, as well as the insurance runs from Hays and Frazier, were crucial given the fact that back-end relievers Yennier Cano and Félix Bautista were unavailable after pitching the past two nights. Baker stranded Irvin’s runner. Pérez stranded two of Voth’s runners in the seventh, striking out leadoff hitter Nick Pratto and getting Salvador Pérez to ground out, before throwing a clean eighth for perhaps his best outing of a disappointing season. Baumann was in line for his first-career save before Frazier’s homer put the Orioles up Orioles are 40-24. They didn’t win their 40th game last year until July 7. Henderson, 21, led off twice in September after his late-season call-up, hitting a homer in the first game he batted there. In his second at-bat Saturday, he launched a first-pitch slider 408 feet into the Orioles’ bullpen in left-center field to put Baltimore up fact that Hyde is comfortable putting Henderson, who went 2-for-4 Saturday, in the leadoff spot is a result of the rookie starting to heat up at the plate after a slow start, as well as his plate discipline. Henderson also led off in Triple-A last season.“He’s led off a little bit in the minor leagues. With his on-base profile and the way he’s swinging the bat right now, it feels right for the time,” Hyde said. “I felt like he was doing good at the plate and comfortable in the batter’s box.”Baltimore Orioles InsiderWeeklyWant to be an Orioles Insider?
